Set up Global Internet Regulatory Body, Urges Former British MP

Doha, May 11 (QNA) - A former member of the British Parliament on Wednesday urged the setting up of a global Internet regulatory institution that lays down policy for all aspects like usage, information exchange, ethics and security.
Founder of the Oxford Internet Institute and ex MP Derek Wyatt said, "With the tremendous growth of the meida, the Internet and expansion of social networking sites, it would be ideal to set up an Internet Policy Institution in five major languages of the world."
Wyatt called for establishing such an institution while speaking on 'The Role of Media, Electronic and Satellite Channels' on the third and final day of the conference on 'Enriching the Middle East's Economic Future' here.
"We need an Internet institution that covers all aspects of its operations and usage from technological, sociological and legal point of view," said the British Labour Party politician and former MP for Sittingbourne and Sheppey. Wyatt is advocating the setting up of a world Internet Policy Institute that would help lay down best practices, regulate Internet and contribute in setting up mechanism that stop cyber crimes like hacking into servers holding critical data.
Other speakers on the panel probed the role of media in the process of political, social and economic changes such as the ones that started in Tunisia, Egypt, Libya and taking place in other Middle East countries.
