Russian Deputy PM Ivanov confirms planned visit to disputed islands

MOSCOW (Kyodo - Russian Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov said Friday he will soon head a government delegation to visit islands at the core of a Japan-Russia territorial row, Interfax news agency reported.
Ivanov said the visit is aimed at inspecting progress in a socio-economic development program for the Kuril Islands including the four Russian-held islands off Hokkaido claimed by both countries, according to the news agency.
On Wednesday, Russian officials in the Far Eastern province of Sakhalin told Kyodo News that Ivanov plans to visit Etorofu and Kunashiri, two of the four islands, on Sunday.
The territorial dispute over the islands known in Japan as the Northern Territories and in Russia as the Southern Kurils has prevented the two countries from signing a postwar peace treaty.
