FLOODS FORCE THOUSANDS IN GORONTALO TO EVACUATE

Gorontalo, Sept 6 (ANTARA) - Flash floods swept through a number of areas in Gorontalo province on Thursday night, forcing thousands of people to evacuate to higher grounds.

Most of the evacuees are being sheltered at two camps and are staying at their relatives' homes which are free from the floods.

"We have prepared refugee camps. The evacuating team is assisting flood victims in worst-hit areas," spokesman of the disaster task force, Halim, said.

The task force, along with the local social service had also set up makeshift kitchens.

Until 4 p.m. on Friday, the floodwaters the city's shopping center rose to more than 1 meters, forcing a number of shops to close.
