S. Korea to reassess security risks in Afghanistan

SEOUL, May 16 (Yonhap) -- South Korea will reassess security risks for its reconstruction workers and troops in Afghanistan amid a series of rocket attacks on their base following the death of Osama bin Laden, foreign ministry officials said Monday.
On Sunday, a rocket-propelled grenade exploded near the South Korean base in Afghanistan with no casualties reported, the eighth attack on the base this year and the third since bin Laden was killed by U.S. troops in Pakistan on May 1, according to the ministry.
The officials said they plan to review security risks against the base in northern Afghanistan to see if additional safety measures need to be taken when they hold their regular meeting on Thursday.
Ministry officials had previously suspected that local security guards launched attacks after losing their jobs manning the base.
South Korea has a provincial reconstruction team of some 90 aid workers and police officers in Afghanistan, along with about 270 troops to protect them.
The team and the troops had been stationed at a U.S. military base in Bagram, Parwan Province, until they moved into the new base in Charika in late January.
