Iran to expand transit network by 6,000km

TEHRAN, May 16 (MNA) – Some 6,000 kilometers length of Iran’s highways will be turned into transit routes by the end of the current calendar year (March 2012), the head of Road Maintenance and Transportation Organization stated.

IRNA quoted Shahriar Afandizadeh as saying that road transport accounts for around 86 percent of the transit of goods via Iran. Last year, 9.5 million tons of goods were transited through the country, up 34 percent year on year, he added.

Referring to the agreement signed in April by Iran, Turkmenistan, Oman, Qatar and Uzbekistan to establish a Central Asia-Persian Gulf transit and transport corridor, he said that countries need a secure route, like Iran, to transit their products and commodities.
