THREE MINISTERS TO ATTEND LITERACY DAY FUNCTION IN BALI
Denpasar, Bali, Sept. 6 (ANTARA) - Coordinating Minister for People's Welfare Aburizal Bakrie, Education Minister Bambang Sudibyo and Women's Empowerment Minister Meutia Hatta will attend a function to mark International Literacy Day 2008 here on Monday (Sept. 8).
Bali is considered to have been successful in eradicating illiteracy. It reduced its illiteracy rate to 13.78 percent in 2006 from 15.67 percent in the previous year, according to Tjok Istri Agung Kusuma Wardhani, head of the Bali provincial education, youth and sports office here on Saturday.
The province has set itself the target of achieving an illiteracy rate of zero percent by the end of this year, Wardhani said.
International Literacy Day is observed on September 8, each year, where UNESCO reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally.
Despite many and varied efforts, achieivng literacy in the whole world remains an elusive target: some 774 million adults lack minimum literacy skills; one in five adults is still not literate and two-thirds of them are women; 75 million children are out-of-school and many more attend irregularly or drop out.
The theme for the 2007-2008 biennium of the United Nations Literacy Decade is "Literacy is the best remedy", which is placing special focus on the important relationship between literacy and health.
