Samsung, LG Display to face off over 3-D TVs in U.S.

SEOUL, May 17 (Yonhap) -- Tech archrivals Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Display Co. said Tuesday they will showcase their 3-D TV products at an industry exposition to be held in the United States this week, bringing their heated 3-D TV battle to the international arena.
The industry trade show, hosted by the Society of Information Display (SID), kicks off in Los Angeles on Tuesday (U.S. time) for a three-day run at a time when Samsung and LG are engaged in an intense battle to become the standard in 3-D TVs.
Samsung and LG said they will present their latest commercial displays, including 3-D displays, in which they are fiercely competing to take the lead, giving a glimpse of the future display technology.
Samsung, the world's largest TV vendor that adopted active shutter glasses for 3-D TVs, said it plans to publicize its ultra definition 3-D TVs, which can display a clear and sharp image about four times better than full high definition TVs. It will also showcase the 3-D technology that allows viewers to see the effect without wearing glasses.
Transparent liquid crystal display (LCD) and environmentally friendly LCD products will also be on the stage, Samsung added.
LG Display said it will present film patterned retarder (FPR) 3-D TVs and its booth will have a corner where visitors can compare viewing experiences on 3-D TVs that adopted different 3-D technologies.
Ultra definition display panels in large sizes, ultra-slim monitors and glass-free 3-D panels for smartphones will also lure visitors, LG Display said.
LG Display supplies LCD panels for affiliate LG Electronics Inc. and Apple Inc.
