Italy, Kuwait agree on cementing ties, coordinating stances -- FM

By Mahdi Nimr
ROME, May 17 (KUNA) -- Italy and Kuwait have agreed on cementing the bilateral friendly ties and coordinating stances between the two states on regional and international political arenas.
The agreement was reached during a meeting between the visiting Kuwaiti Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Sheikh Dr. Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah, and his Italian counterpart, Franco Frattini.
In remarks to KUNA, Sheikh Dr. Mohammad said he discussed with Frattini the distinguished bilateral ties, robustly bolstered with the visit of His Highness the Amir Sheikh Sabah Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah to Rome, last year, when His Highness held talks with Italian President Giorgio Napolitano and Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, agreeing with the top leaders on enhancing further the mutual economic cooperation between the two sides.
Other fruits of last year's top-level talks was an accord to organize a visit for Kuwaiti businessmen to Italy and discuss means of promoti ng the economic and cooperation ties between the two friendly countries.
Regarding his fresh talks with Frattini, Sheikh Mohammad said they dealt with regional issues, adding that he agreed with the Italian counterpart on coordinating the two states' stands ahead of the planned meeting of the international contact group on Libya, due in Abu Dhabi, the UAE, early next month.
Elaborating, Sheikh Mohammad stated that he focused the conversations with Frattini on Kuwait's desire to support the interim national council of Libya, namely with humanitarian aid to help the people cope with the war-caused hardships, adding that he agreed with him on broad plans for such coordination in support of the people in the stricken nation.
The cordial discussions also dealt with Middle Eastern issues, centering on the question of the Rome convention for restructuring the United Nations Security Council, he said, noting that the talks revealed harmony of the stances of Kuwait and Italy at this level.
Conferees, during the Monday meeting, held at the headquarters of the Italian Foreign Ministry, agreed on the necessity to reform the UNSC regulations in a manner that might be attuned to new global conditions and interests of the members of the international community including small nations.
Sheikh Mohammad affirmed necessity to place restrictions on usage of the veto -- currently -- solely enjoyed by the five permanent members of the UNSC, and tying it to usage of force under Chapter VII of the UN Charter.
Recent events have underlined necessity of attaining such a right, Sheikh Mohammad stated, alluding to the Arab draft resolution calling for establishment of an independent Palestinian state, that was aborted with a veto by the US.
It is not in the nations' interests that such a prerogative is being used to abort peaceful action aimed at finding a peaceful and legislative settlement to such problems, he stressed.
