Apple taps former LG executive to lead Korean unit
By Lee Youkyung SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) -- Apple Inc. recently appointed a former executive of LG Electronics Inc. as the new head of its Korean unit, an industry source said Wednesday. Dominique Oh is the new general manager at Apple Korea, which oversees the U.S. company's business in South Korea, the source said on condition of anonymity. He succeeded Andrew Sedgwick, who led the Korean unit since 2001. Previously a senior vice president at LG Electronics, Oh held several key positions in LG's Paris office and Seoul headquarters, including head of the Korean company's high-end smartphone business, product planning and partnership development with global mobile operators. Apple's Korean unit plans to increase its workforce, and is hiring sales and marketing personnel, according to the source. The U.S. company gained significant ground in the Asian market following the local debut of the iPhone at the end of 2009, which topped 2 million sales in January this year. South Korea's leading mobile carrier SK Telecom Co. joined No. 2 carrier KT Corp. and began selling the iPhone in March. Apple's Korean unit, wholly owned by the U.S. parent company, had 40 employees in 2009, tasked with sales and marketing, according to its latest filing.
