Chiefs of major int'l environmental groups praise S. Korea's 'green growth' drive

SEOUL (Yonhap) - The chiefs of major international environmental organizations praised South Korea's "green growth" policy of seeking economic growth through environment-friendly technologies, saying the drive is helpful in fighting climate change and desertification, an official said Wednesday.
The praise came when Lee met with Ahmed Djoghlaf, executive secretary of the Convention on Biological Diversity; Luc Gnacadja, executive secretary of the U.N. Convention to Combat Desertification; and Mourad Ahmia, executive secretary of the Group of 77, an organization of developing nations.
The three were in Seoul to attend environmental conferences.
"The point of what they said in today's meeting was that they respect and view highly the steps that South Korea has taken with regard to green growth, saying green growth is a solution that is helpful not only in (curbing) climate change, but also resolving desertification and land degradation," presidential spokeswoman Kim Hee-jung said.
Lee said that climate change is not a matter that is related only to any specific nation, but an issue that the entire world should pay attention to, and that South Korea will take the lead in fighting global warming, Kim said.
