G-20 parliamentary leaders kick off Seoul forum
By Kim Eun-jung
SEOUL (Yonhap) - Parliamentary speakers and representatives of Group of 20 major economies opened a three-day forum on Wednesday for discussions on global safety and development issues.
The G-20 Speakers' Consultation brings together parliamentary leaders and representatives from 26 nations and groups, including five non-G-20 members and Inter-Parliamentary Union members.
South Korea's National Assembly speaker, Park Hee-tae, hosted a welcome dinner Wednesday for participants and their spouses at the Hotel Silla in Seoul.
During the reception, the chair of the Seoul forum declared the opening of the conference and introduced agenda items under the theme "Safe World, Better Future."
"I expect the Seoul forum to help strengthen global partnership in connection with the G-20 summit and provide an impetus to inter-parliamentary collaboration," Park said in a welcoming address.
"I also hope participants experience Korea's traditional culture and the Korean Wave through this meeting," Park said, referring to Korean pop culture, also known as "Hallyu," which has gained worldwide popularity in recent years, especially in Asian countries.
The inter-parliamentary meeting comes as an extension of Seoul's hosting of the G-20 economic summit in November, following an inaugural meeting held in Canada in September.
A traditional Korean house, which was recently built inside the National Assembly compound, will be used for receptions and other sideline events for foreign guests, while the conference will be held at the main Assembly building.
