Former Israeli envoy's son prosecuted for smoking marijuana
SEOUL, May 19 (Yonhap) -- A son of a former Israeli ambassador to Seoul has been arrested and indicted on charges of smoking marijuana, Seoul's prosecutors said Thursday.
The accused, whose name was withheld, was suspected of receiving some 0.5 grams of marijuana from a foreigner and smoking the banned substance on April 28 around a bar he owned in central Seoul, according to officials from the Seoul Central District Prosecutors' Office.
He was arrested on the spot by tipped-off police officers and confessed to his crime in the investigation process, they said.
He remained in South Korea to attend a school and run the bar after his father went back to Israel. The prosecutors refused to elaborate on further details.
They said they have not confirmed whether he was involved in drug smuggling.
Under South Korean law, marijuana users can be sentenced to a maximum of five years in prison or fined up to 50 million won (US$46,000)
