Taiwan's HTC to debut new smartphone in S. Korea
SEOUL, May 20 (Yonhap) -- HTC Corp. said Friday it will release its new flagship smartphone in South Korea next week, hoping that the phone's movie streaming feature will help the Taiwanese firm gain ground.
SK Telecom Co., South Korea's largest mobile phone carrier, will exclusively release the Sensation smartphone on May 25, said HTC's North Asia President Jack Tong during a media event. The retail price is set at 847,000 won (US$780).
Powered by Qualcomm Inc.'s 1.2-gigahertz dual core processor and a 4.2-inch display screen, the new smartphone is designed to best support the video viewing experience, according to the official.
The Sensation, which is HTC's first mobile phone to feature a movie-viewing program called "HTC Watch," represents the Taiwanese phone maker's ambition to advance into the content distribution market.
"We believe that the multimedia content is the future direction (for mobile makers) in order to provide the differentiation and values," Tong told Yonhap News Agency on the sidelines of the event.
The HTC Watch enables users to purchase, rent and stream the latest blockbuster movies directly from the smartphone. HTC will add music, 3-D games, and electronic books and magazines, he added.
HTC is in talks with Korean filmmakers to deliver local movies directly through the phone, according to Patrick Paek, director at HTC Korea. But the HTC Watch service will not be available for South Korean smartphone buyers until the second half of this year.
In February, HTC announced that it will acquire Saffron Digital, a British company with digital multimedia delivery technology, for US$48 million. It will continue to seek opportunities in acquisitions and partnerships in the area of content, the company's regional president said.
"We'll evaluate all kinds of options," including mergers and acquisitions, Tong said.
HTC, which lost its spot as the No. 4 smartphone maker to Samsung Electronics Co. in 2010, pits its new Sensation smartphone against Samsung's Galaxy S2 smartphone, which went on sale last month.
