Gov't, ruling party agree to try to pass Korea-U.S. FTA in June
SEOUL -- The government and the ruling party have agreed to try to pass South Korea's free trade agreement with the United States through a parliamentary committee next month, an official said Friday.
"There is no disagreement between the government and the party on the necessity of the Korea-U.S. FTA," a senior presidential official said. "Our views have converged on introducing (the agreement) before the parliamentary foreign affairs and trade committee in June."

(2nd LD) Lee calls for end to factional division within ruling party
SEOUL -- President Lee Myung-bak called for an end to the factional division within the ruling Grand National Party on Friday, asking newly elected party leaders to carry out reforms and improve internal unity to win back public trust.
Lee's meeting with Rep. Hwang Woo-yea, the new floor leader and acting chairman of the GNP, came as a sense of crisis deepens within the party after it suffered a humiliating defeat in last month's by-elections, which were seen as a test ahead of next year's general and presidential elections.

N. Korea kidnapped S. Korean military officers in 1999: ex-journalist
SEOUL -- A former journalist told a Seoul court that North Korea kidnapped two South Korean colonel-level officers and arrested two others in 1999 when they apparently were on secret missions in China and the North, court officials said Friday.
The ex-journalist, only identified by surname Jeong, made the testimony during a trial of a former South Korean spy, who was arrested last June on charges of handing over military secrets to the North, at the Seoul High Court on Thursday, officials said.

N. Korea reportedly purged senior intelligence official
SEOUL -- North Korea appears to have purged a senior intelligence official, South Korean officials said Friday, in what could be a case of infighting amid its power succession process.
The alleged purge of Ryu Kyong, a deputy head of North Korea's state security agency and a key aide to leader Kim Jong-il, seems highly credible, an official said.

Daily yuan trading outside China tops US$1 bln
HONG KONG -- Daily trading volume in the yuan outside mainland China exceeded the US$1 billion mark for the first time on Friday, Deutsche Bank said, pointing to the growing global use of the Chinese currency.
The German bank said that the volume represents a two-fold increase from five months earlier. The milestone was reached nearly two years after Chinese authorities allowed overseas trading of its currency.
