QUAKE HITS MALUKU
Jakarta, Sept 7 (ANTARA) - An earthquake measuring 5.3 on the Richter scale hit the waters north-west of Saumlaki in the eastern Indonesian province of Maluku on Sunday morning.
The epicenter of the quake which struck at 06.02 a.m. was in the sea 77 km north-west of Saumlaki at a depth of 10 km, the Meteorology and Geophysics Agency (BMG) said in an official statement.
The quake did not have the potential to cause a tsunami, it said.
Indonesia sits on the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where the meeting of continental plates causes high volcanic and seismic activity.
Maluku province lies at the meeting point of the country's two main chains of volcanoes.
