TOKYO, May 21 Kyodo -
Insurance payments to victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami will amount to around 2.6 trillion yen ($31.9 billion), probably making it the biggest insurance payout resulting from a natural disaster in Japan, a Kyodo News tally showed Saturday.
The payments include 970 billion yen related to claims for quake damage to homes and 593 billion yen to be shouldered by leading insurers for other property damage such as fire losses incurred by companies.
Life insurance claims amounting to around 200 billion yen are expected, according to Koichiro Watanabe, chairman of the Life Insurance Association of Japan.
Meanwhile, mutual insurance cooperatives are likely to pay out 840 billion yen to their member policyholders such as farmers, according to the tally.
