Iranian foreign minister visits Beijing
TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) -- Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi arrived in the Chinese capital of Beijing on Sunday to hold talks with a number of Chinese officials.
Salehi is scheduled to hold a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on the latest regional developments as well as bilateral issues.
On Tuesday, the Iranian foreign minister will leave Tehran for Bali, Indonesia, where he will participate in the 16th foreign ministerial meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement.
The NAM meeting is scheduled to be held from May 23 to 27. Discussions on a number of issues facing the international community are on the agenda of the meeting.
On the sidelines of the NAM meeting, Salehi will hold a joint meeting with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi and Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla.
The meeting between Salehi and al-Arabi will be the first meeting between senior Iranian and Egyptian officials since the ouster of Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak on February 11.
On April 30, Salehi said, “Iran, Egypt, and Cuba are currently the troika members of NAM, and the foreign ministers of the three countries will discuss the activities of the Non-Aligned Movement during the meeting of NAM foreign ministers in Bali, Indonesia.”
“During the meeting, I will meet with Egyptian Foreign Minister Nabil al-Arabi and will discuss matters related to NAM as well bilateral issues with him,” Salehi stated at the time.
The Islamic Republic of Iran cut diplomatic ties with Egypt in 1979 because Egypt signed a peace treaty with Israel and offered asylum to former Iranian dictator Mohammad Reza Pahlavi after he was deposed.
After the collapse of Hosni Mubarak’s regime, Iranian and Egyptian officials expressed interest in restoring diplomatic relations between the two countries. Salehi have also extended an invitation to al-Arabi to pay a visit to Tehran.
