Iranian photojournalists missing world events: official

TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) -- Deputy Culture Minister for Press Affairs Mohammad-Jafar Mohammadzadeh is convinced that Iranian photographers are missing world events and crises.

“We do poorly in registering events going on in the world and are forced to make use of international media instead,” Mohammadzadeh said at the unveiling ceremony of the book “Photojournalism” on Saturday.

The book “Photojournalism” by translator and compiler Esmaeil Abbasi was unveiled during a ceremony held at the House of Iranian Journalists.

“We need to depict events through our own lens. How many Iranian photographers were present to depict the tsunami in Japan or the devastating flood in Pakistan?” Mohammadzadeh asked.

Director of the Iranian Photojournalists’ Association Kavus Sadeqlu, also present at the ceremony, talked about the book saying that it provided for the needs of photographers and could also be used as an academic text for students.

“There is a broad gap between photojournalism in Iran and the world and we hope that we can overcome this obstacle soon,” he added.

Compiler Abbasi who was the last to speak said, “I have been teaching for many years and have mainly focused on basic issues. The book contains theories on photography.

“Our photographers face many problems in doing their jobs. In Iran, it is not yet clear where photography is allowed and where it is not. This needs to be clarified to remove some of the problems,” he added.
