Persian fable “Mice and Cat” now available for Swedish readers
TEHRAN, May 23 (MNA) -- A trilingual version of the famous humorous fable “The Mice and the Cat”, a political satire by the Iranian 14th century poet Ubeyd Zakani, is now available in Sweden.
The book, which is in Persian, English and Swedish, was unveiled during a ceremony at the Uppsala University on May 13 that was attended by several scholars.
Released by the Upsalla University Press, the book was translated into English and Swedish by the literature scholar Bo Utas. However, his translations are based on two different editions.
The English translation is based on a facsimile of its manuscript preserved in the National Library of Tunis with 162 verses, but the Swedish translation originates from the late 1980s’ version of the poem released by Iran’s Karavan Publications with 90 verses.
The English title of the book reads “The Mice and the Cat, Ascribed to Ubeyd Zakani”.
In the book’s introduction written by Iranian scholar Ali Mohaddes, it is said that the book was not written by Ubeyd Zakani but was ascribed to him over time.
Mohaddes presents reasons for his claim in the book and proposes that the fable cannot belong to the body of work by Zakani. However, he does not explain it in detail.
Also included in the book are copies of the Persian text of the fable as well as images of the manuscript preserved in the National Library of Tunis. Scholar Carina Jahani also penned a note on this fable as well.
