Army suggests insufficient medical treatment to blame in recruit's death

SEOUL, May 23 (Yonhap) -- Inappropriate medical treatment is believed to be partly to blame for the death of a new Army recruit after a training exercise last month, military investigators said Monday.
The 23-year-old recruit, identified by his surname Noh, died of an inflammation of the brain and meninges, the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord, on April 24, two days after he showed a sudden high fever following a 20-kilometer endurance march.
While Noh was said to have complained of his pain, a private first class medic at an Army recruit training center in Nonsan, 160 kilometers south of Seoul, only gave him two doses of Tylenol without prescription by a military doctor, investigators said.
Investigators also found that military doctors at the Korea Army Training Center neglected their duty to diagnose Noh's symptoms before his death.
"The Army is now in the process of sorting out who was responsible and rebuking them in line with relevant codes," an investigator said.
The Defense Ministry also said it will set up a task force to revamp the medical system at training camps.
The task force will be headed by Vice Defense Minister Lee Yong-gull and will inspect medical infrastructure at division-sized units by October, the ministry said.
