HH the Emir Opens the First Regional Conference on the International Criminal Court

Doha, May 24 (QNA) - HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani patronized Tuesday the opening of the First Regional Conference on the International Criminal Court (ICC) at the Ritz Carlton Hotel.
The opening was attended by a number of Their Excellencies Sheikhs, HE the Speaker of the Advisory Council, a number of Their Excellencies the Ministers, heads of the diplomatic missions accredited to the country and guests.
HH the Emir Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani addressed the opening of the conference stressing the importance to combat the crimes of aggression, genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity, and the need to bring the perpetrators to justice, in order to maintain global security and stability, and out of respect for human beings' dignity and legitimate rights.
HH the Emir highlighted that in recent years several precedents of forceful handling of those crimes by the special international criminal tribunals for each of the former Republic of Yugoslavia, Rwanda, Cambodia and Sierra Leone. Those experiments have added a significant legal legacy in this area.
HH the Emir underlined that the statute of the International Criminal Court does not accommodate many of the serious crimes against which the court was incapable of achieving justice, such as those crimes that have been perpetrated and still being committed against civilians under occupation in Gaza Strip.
HH noted that the power granted to the UN Security Council to activate or stop the functioning of the Tribunal might contradict the independence mandatory for the Tribunal to perform its tasks.
The criminal justice, whether local or international, has essential components which are adopted by all the legal systems in the world and should always be adhered to and promoted to deliver the sublime goals of justice, foremost among these are impartiality and equality before the law, and fair trial, HH the Emir said.
HH the Emir underlined that the International Criminal Court was one of its most important achievements on the path to expeditious justice regardless of nationality, ethnicity or religion. It will be an essential basis for the progress of the international community end human civilization.
