Cargo handling at S. Korean seaports grows 8 pct in April
SEOUL (Yonhap) - Cargo handling at South Korea's seaports grew nearly 8 percent in April from a year earlier, driven by improving economic conditions, government data showed Wednesday.
The volume of cargo handled by seaports here amounted to 107.6 million tons last month, up 7.7 percent from a year earlier, showed the data by the Ministry of Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs.
The growth came from increased shipments of oil-related products and bituminous coal moving in and out of local seaports.
Cargo shipments of oil products jumped 15.2 percent from a year earlier, while those of bituminous coal posted a 21.7 percent gain over the same period.
Volume of container cargo handled at local seaports also jumped 11.2 percent last month to 1.83 million TEUs, or 20-foot equivalent units.
Busan, the largest port, located in the nation's southeast, retained its fifth spot in the world in terms of container cargo handling, which amounted to 1.83 million TEUs in April, up 13.6 percent from a year earlier, the data showed.
