S. Korean taekwondo body sets out new plans for future

SEOUL, May 26 (Yonhap) -- Kukkiwon, the Seoul-based headquarters of world taekwondo, on Thursday set out to help improve the global status of the traditional Korean martial art.
Kukkiwon, which is also home of the World Taekwondo Academy, unveiled its new vision titled "TKK," after taekwondo, Kukkiwon and Korea. Kim Joo-hoon, director of the board at Kukkiwon, said the occasion served as an opportunity for the organization to reflect on its past.
"Since we were established in 1972, we've prided ourselves on being the 'world taekwondo headquarters,' but we have mostly been a domestic body," Kim said. "We've not been able to embrace global taekwondo families. And we're at a turning point that will determine whether we can truly become a global center for taekwondo."
Kukkiwon offers promotion tests for "dan," or certified taekwondo rankings, and also operates a research institute for the martial art. Its taekwondo demonstration team travels around the world each year to help promote taekwondo.
According to Kukkiwon, specific future plans include hosting an international forum for taekwondo instructors, setting up international standards for taekwondo training and holding academic seminars for the martial art.
Also, Kukkiwon plans to develop "global taekwondo ambassadors" and dispatch instructors overseas to help spread taekwondo.
