Former Lee aide offers to resign as state auditor in corruption scandal
SEOUL, May 26 (Yonhap) -- Eun Jin-soo, former legal advisor to President Lee Myung-bak, on Thursday offered to resign as an auditor of the Board of Audit and Inspection (BAI) amid suspicion that he had worked as a lobbyist for the troubled Busan Savings Bank, BAI officials said.
The 50-year-old Eun has been under investigation for his suspicious role in the Busan Savings Bank scandal, in which the lender was suspected of having offered bribes to government officials, including some former and incumbent Financial Supervisory Service officials, in return for their overlooking of illegal lending and other wrongdoings. Operations of the bank were suspended in February.
Prosecution investigators said Eun is accused of helping the lender gain favorable treatment from financial regulators and build ties to powerful politicians.
"Eun has tendered his resignation to BAI Chairman Yang Kun," said a BAI official.
