S. Korea's education competitiveness ranking rises 6 spots to 29th
SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's education is the 29th most competitive in the world, Seoul's education ministry said Friday, marking a six-notch rise in the global ranking from the previous year.
According to the 2011 World Competitiveness Yearbook published by the International Institute for Management Development in Lausanne, Switzerland, South Korea's education competitiveness rose thanks to significant improvements in the educational system, university education, management education, language skills and science in schools, the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology said.
The results were based on an analysis of 11 quantitative factors, such as total public expenditure on education and pupil-teacher ratios, as well as five qualitative indicators measuring how well the educational system meets the needs of a competitive economy, among other factors. The latter five were based on surveys of corporations.
Of a total of 59 nations, South Korea's education was the fourth most competitive in Asia after Singapore (10th), Taiwan (25th) and Hong Kong (28th), while Denmark, Ireland and Finland topped the list, the yearbook showed.
