S. Korean, Japanese meat, dairy products safe from radiation

SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) -- South Korean and imported Japanese meat and dairy products are safe from radioactive contamination and pose no health risks, a government quarantine service said Friday.
The National Veterinary Research and Quarantine Service (NVRQS) said it had screened 101 local fresh milk products since Japan's Fukushima power station started to release radioactive on March 12, and found no harmful contaminants.
The screening followed the discovery of minuscule radioactive particles in the atmosphere and rainwater in South Korea starting in late March, which raised fears that such particles might have entered the food chain.
No radioactive particles have been detected in the air or in rain drops since April 26.
The service said 19 shipments of meat and dairy products totaling 14,546 kilograms, which were imported from Japan in the past few months, showed no abnormal radiation levels. The imports were from regions that Japan said were not affected by fallout from the stricken power station, located about 250 kilometers northeast of Tokyo.
South Korea has been checking all food products from the neighboring country to reflect public health concerns and has banned a handful of products, such as bamboo shoots and bracken from areas close to Fukushima.
