Seoul mayor to visit three African nations next month
SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) -- Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon will leave for Africa late next month on a three-nation trip aimed at boosting partnerships in energy, infrastructure and other areas, the municipal government said Friday.
The trip comes as the Seoul Metropolitan Government is seeking to tap business opportunities in African nations, which are rich in oil and other mineral resources, city officials said.
The 11-day trip from June 21 will take Oh to four cities in Tanzania, Kenya and the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he will sign memorandums of understanding (MOUs) to share his government's experiences in developing a computerized city administration network, urban development, transportation and disaster management, according to the city government.
The MOUs will also contain plans to share the African nations' information and know-how concerning resources development and allow Seoul-based firms to participate in various resources development projects that are under way in those countries, the officials said.
In Dar es Salaam, the old capital of Tanzania, Oh will attend a U.N. public service awarding ceremony, the local government said.
The municipal government has been chosen as the winner of a U.N. award for public service in recognition of its programs to tackle tax-related complaints from citizens and help the self-support of teenage girls who run away from home, it said.
Introduced in July 2000, the U.N. Public Service Award has recognized groundbreaking institutional effort to make services efficient and accessible to the public.
