Beijing to begin repairing road linking Chinese-N. Korean border cities

HONG KONG, May 27 (Yonhap) -- China will start repairing a road that connects a border city and North Korea later this month, a government Web site said Friday, a move seen as part of bilateral efforts to deepen economic ties.
The provincial government of Jilin said on its Web site that the repair work will begin at the end of May on the 53-kilometer-long expressway that connects the North Korean town of Wonjong with China's Hunchun and the North Korean port city of Rajin.
The announcement comes as North Korean leader Kim Jong-il returned home earlier on Friday after concluding a weeklong trip to China. Kim held a summit meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao in Beijing on Wednesday, agreeing on promoting bilateral economic and diplomatic relations.
In March last year, China reportedly obtained the exclusive right to develop Rajin, located southeast of Wonjong and connected to the Chinese border town of Hunchun by a bridge.
China had been seeking Pyongyang's permission to extend its use of a port in Rajin, which would give China's three northeastern provinces -- Jilin, Liaoning and Heilongjiang -- access to the East Sea.
The repair, which will involve roadbeds, bridges and waterways, is expected to cost 150 million yuan (US$23 million), to be shouldered entirely by China.
The construction, when completed, will allow vehicles to run at 40 kilometers per hour, the provincial government said. It was not disclosed how long the repair work will last.
