China's mobile phone users top 900 mln
HONG KONG, May 27 (Yonhap) -- The number of mobile phone subscribers in China exceeded 900 million last month as more Chinese people consider cell phones a daily necessity, a government report showed Friday.
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology said in the report that the number of Chinese mobile phone users totaled 900.3 million as of the end of April, which is equivalent to 64.3 percent of the country's population estimated at 1.4 billion.
The figure compares with about 300 million mobile phone users in the United States as of the end of 2010.
In April alone, China had 11 million new subscribers for mobile phone service, according to the report.
China has seen steady growth in its number of mobile phone users in recent years. The number was 679 million in April 2009 and 787 million in April 2010.
Beijing-based researcher Analysys International said earlier this month that Nokia Corp. holds the largest share of the mobile phone market in China with 29.6 percent as of end-April, followed by South Korean electronics maker Samsung Electronics Co. with 22.6 percent.
Out of all the mobile users, 28 percent use smartphones, the research firm said. It predicted that 50 percent of the Chinese mobile subscribers will use smartphones by the end of 2013.
