Samsung Mobile Display to set up JV for polyimide

SEOUL, May 27 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Mobile Display Co. (SMD), a South Korean display maker, said Friday that it has signed a deal with a Japanese chemical firm to set up a joint venture to produce a high-end chemical material.
The joint venture, which will be equally owned by Samsung Mobile Display and Ube Industries Ltd., will produce polyimide, a super heat-resistant resin.
SMD, a joint venture between Samsung Electronics Co. and its sister unit Samsung SDI Co., said polyimide is expanding a wide variety of applications into the aerospace industry and the electronics sector.
The venture will also develop a so-called "flexible display" to be used for mobile phones and tablet computers, SMD said.
In 2007, SMD produced active-matrix organic light-emitting diode (AMOLED) panels used for smartphones and tablet computers for the first time in the world.
