Military to bolster chain of command at field army units

SEOUL, May 28 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's military plans to strengthen the chain of command at field army units as part of its reform measures to make the armed forces stronger and more efficient, a senior military official said Saturday.
Under the plan, about 30 general-level officers in administrative posts at military headquarters would be gradually assigned roles as deputy field commanders by 2020, the official said on the condition of anonymity.
The plan follows the 73-point military reform measures unveiled by Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin in March, in response to North Korea's two deadly attacks on the South last year.
"As a result of the top command reform and the realignment of division-sized units, about 90 general-level posts would be eliminated and some 30 of them would be switched to deputy field commanders," the official said.
"So, some 60 general-level posts would be eventually curtailed."
The official's remarks are in line with the reform measures, which called for a 15-percent cut in the number of general-grade officers. There are some 430 general-level officers leading the military.
The South's military has given greater leeway to field commanders to carry out counterattacks as a way to better respond to North Korean provocations. Last year, North Korea sank a South Korean warship and shelled a southern border island, leaving 50 people, including two civilians, dead.
