Defense Ministry to hire U.S. Embassy security expert

TOKYO (Kyodo) - The Defense Ministry will hire Ayako Kimura, an expert on security issues at the U.S. Embassy in Tokyo, on June 8 as a senior official in charge of the relocation of a U.S. air base in Okinawa Prefecture, ministry officials said Saturday.
It is extremely rare for the Japanese government to employ a staff of a foreign diplomatic mission as a high-ranking bureaucrat.
Kimura, 43, was with Japan Airlines and the National Institute for Research Advancement before taking the position at the U.S. Embassy's political-military affairs unit. She has recently been a liaison between Defense Minister Toshimi Kitazawa and U.S. Ambassador to Japan John Roos.
Kitazawa, who is eager to advance the relocation of the Futenma Air Station in Okinawa as agreed by Japan and the United States amid stiff local opposition, won the nod for Kimura's new post after directly talking with Roos, the officials said.
