N. Korean leader tours power plant upon arrival from China trip

SEOUL (Yonhap) - North Korean leader Kim Jong-il, accompanied by his heir-apparent son, toured a power plant under construction, the North's media reported Saturday, in what appeared to be his first official activity after returning from a week-long visit to China.
The 69-year-old leader returned home from China on Friday, ending what a top Chinese leader described as a study tour. In Beijing, he met President Hu Jintao and Premier Wen Jiabao in talks that Chinese media said focused on economic cooperation.
The North's Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said that Kim visited the Huichon power plant under construction. It did not say when the visit was made. The Huichon hydraulic project is part of North Korea's program to tackle its chronic energy shortage.
The leader "provided field guidance to the construction site of the Huichon Power Station upon his return home after wrapping up his unofficial visit to China and had a significant meeting with people there," the KCNA said in a report, monitored in Seoul.
During the tour, Kim was briefed on the progress of the project, the report said without elaborating.
Kim's entourage on the tour included his youngest son, Jong-un who is being groomed to succeed him and other high-ranking officials including Ri Yong-ho, vice-chairman of the Central Military Commission of the Workers' Party, it said.
In China, Kim traveled by train 6,000 kilometers, visiting several industrial hubs where he toured auto and electronics plants.
In a meeting with South Korean President Lee Myung-bak in Tokyo on the sidelines of an annual three-way summit with Japanese Prime Minister Naoto Kan, the Chinese premier said the North Korean leader was invited to learn from China's economic development.
