Region is burning in the fire of U.S. avarice: Iranian cleric
TEHRAN, May 29 (MNA) -- The leader of this week’s Friday prayers in Tehran has said that the region is burning in the fire of the avarice of the United States.
“The United States, in cooperation with the Al Khalifa and Al Saud has turned Bahrain into a large prison and are using medieval tortures,” Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami told worshippers at Friday prayers at the campus of the University of Tehran.
The U.S. is manipulating the developments in Bahrain, Khatami stated, adding, “The tortures are being carried out in this country with the cooperation of Britain and the Zionist regime, and the torturers are the Baathists, who were the supporters of (former Iraqi dictator) Saddam (Hussein) and are backing the Zionists.”
Elsewhere in his remarks, Khatami commented on the warm welcome that the U.S. Congress gave Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday, saying, “The fact that the U.S. congressman honored the prime minister of the Zionist regime was another nail in the coffin of the United States and indicated how subservient they are to the Zionist regime.”
Ayatollah Khatami also pointed to the deviant current that has recently surfaced in the country, saying it is using similar methods to those employed by deviant currents which have emerged since the victory of the Islamic Revolution of Iran.
He added that challenging the principle of velayat-e faqih (rule of the supreme jurisprudent), undermining religion and propagating secularism, using the people’s sanctities as a tool, confronting the insightful religious scholars, and promoting immorality in the society are among the common methods used by the deviant currents.
