Iranian water polo players must change their mindset, Paolo Malara

TEHRAN, May 29 (MNA) -- Iran's water polo coach Paolo Malara has said that Iranian players must change their mindset if they want to qualify for the Olympics.

Iran will compete in the Olympic qualifiers which are going to be held next year in Tokyo from January 23 to 29.

“Water Polo World Championship and World League are important but Olympic Games are more significant. Their dreams will come true if they work hard and change their mindset,” Malara said.

“I believe that Iran has so many talented players but they need to work together for a long time if they want to get good results. In the countries such as Hungary and Serbia, players are together for better part of the year. Also, they have well-organized leagues that help the players to play in the high quality competitions,” the Italian added.

So far, the Iranians could not advance to the Olympic Games.

Asked if there’s any chance the team could qualify for the prestigious event. Malara said, “I am not a magician but I will do my best to pave the way (for the team) to go to the Olympics. That’s why I am here,” he said.

“We participated with a lot of young players in 3rd FINA Water Polo Development Trophy held in Saudi Arabia two months ago. We are working on a new generation of Iranian players. It means we need time,” Malara concluded.
