S. Korean military officer abducted by N. Korea in 1998: source

SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) -- A South Korean military intelligence officer was abducted by North Korea near its border with China in 1998, but returned home later that year, a military source said Monday.
"I have learned that one lieutenant colonel of the Defense Intelligence Command was kidnapped by North Korea in 1998 while carrying out a mission at the border between the North and China, but he returned home at the end of the year," the source said on the condition of anonymity.
The source, however, didn't give details such as how the officer was able to return home.
The source also denied a recent testimony by a former South Korean journalist, who claimed that North Korea kidnapped two South Korean colonel-level officers and arrested two others in 1999 when they apparently were on secret missions in China and the North.
"The recent testimony about the four colonel-level officers is not true," the source said.
The ex-journalist, identified only by his surname, Jeong, made the testimony on May 19 during a trial of a former South Korean spy, who was arrested last June on charges of handing over military secrets to the North, at the Seoul High Court, according to court officials.
