SK Innovation starts work on 2nd battery plant
By Nam Kwang-sik
SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) -- SK Innovation Co., South Korea's top refiner, said Monday that it broke ground for a plant on the country's west coast to produce batteries for electric vehicles (EVs) that are propelled by only electrical power.
The plant, to be built in Seosan, 151 kilometers southwest of Seoul by early in 2012, will produce 200-megawatt-hour (MWh) batteries, SK Innovation said in a statement. A megawatt hour is the amount of power used if 1 million watts are used for an hour.
The company plans to increase the plant's production capacity to 500 MWhs by the end of 2012.
In May 2010, SK Innovation completed its first battery plant, which can produce 100-MWh batteries in Daejeon, 164km south of Seoul.
SK Innovation will produce 600-MWh batteries in its plants by the end of 2012, which can annually offer power to more than 30,000 EVs that can travel at a speed of over 60km per hour, the company said.
The company plans to provide batteries to the country's top automaker, Hyundai Motor Co., and its smaller affiliate, Kia Motors Corp., along with German automaker Daimler AG's two units, Mercedes-AMG GmbH and Mitsubishi Fuso, it said.
SK Innovation also produces lithium-ion battery separators (LiBS), a key component in EV batteries. The company broke ground for its sixth and seventh LiBS plants in April 2010 with the aim of starting mass production in 2012.
