Domestic sales of Galaxy S2 smartphones top 1 mln

SEOUL, May 30 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's second-largest maker of mobile phones, said Monday that it has sold more than 1 million units of the Galaxy S2 smartphone to domestic carriers since the phone debuted about one month ago.
The Galaxy S2 smartphone, which features a lighter and thinner body and a faster processor than its predecessor, reached the milestone at a faster speed than its earlier version, Samsung said in a statement.
The sales figure counts only the number of mobile phones shipped to wireless carriers, not the number of mobile phones sold to consumers.
Samsung said the Galaxy S2 smartphone topped 1 million sales in a shorter period than any other mobile phone sold in the country.
Unlike the first Galaxy smartphone, which was launched exclusively by the country's top mobile carrier, SK Telecom Co., the Galaxy S2 was released by all three mobile operators in South Korea starting April 29, as SK Telecom began offering Apple Inc.'s iPhone in March.
The earlier Galaxy phone took 70 days to hit 1 million in sales after it began selling domestically in June of last year.
Samsung's flagship Galaxy S2 smartphone began selling globally earlier this month through about 140 mobile carriers in 120 countries, according to the company.
