Seoul shares up 1.5 pct in late-morning trade
SEOUL, May 31 (Yonhap) -- South Korean stocks traded 1.5 percent higher late Tuesday morning, helped by strong institutional and foreign buying, analysts said.
The benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) jumped 31.47 points to 2,125.26 as of 11:20 a.m.
Chemicals shored up the KOSPI with LG Chem and SK Innovation both adding around 4 percent.
Other blue chips gathered ground with Hyundai Heavy Industries surging nearly 7 percent and Samsung Electronics gaining more than 1 percent.
The local currency was changing hands at 1,076.35 won to the U.S. dollar as of 11:20 a.m., up 3.85 won from Monday's close.
