Samsung starts mass production of 30-nano DRAM modules
SEOUL, May 31 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest maker of computer memory chips, said Tuesday that it has begun mass production of 32-gigabyte DDR3 dynamic random access memory (DRAM) modules for servers based on 30-nanometer class technology. The new modules feature a fast data processing speed about 40 percent speedier than previous products based on the 40-nanometer class technology, Samsung said in a statement. It also consumes about 18 percent less electricity than previous models. The company plans to raise the portion of DRAM products based on the 30-nanometer class technology to 10 percent of its entire DRAM product lineup by 2012, it said. Samsung plans to manufacture 4-gigabit DRAM products based on the 20-nanometer class technology within this year, a company official said in a statement, in a bid to tap into the rising demand for environmentally friendly, energy-saving chip products.
