Khalifa confers with Karzai
Sept. 9, 2008 (WAM) - President His Highness Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan and President Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan held a round of talks yesterday evening in the presence of General H.H. Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, crown prince of Abu Dhabi and deputy supreme commander of the UAE Armed Forces and H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister.
Sheikh Khalifa reiterated UAE's support to the efforts being made by the government of Afghanistan to restore peace and stability in the country.
He said that development should go side by side with the security efforts in Afghanistan, adding that the UAE will continue to provide all kinds of support to ease the suffering of the Afghani people.
Sheikh Khalifa referred to the role of President Karzai, saying that his visit to the UAE would open new horizons for cooperation between the two friendly countries.
He noted that the aid given by the international community to Afghanistan will enable all classes of Afghani people to join the political process and to reject violence.
"We sincerely hope that the efforts made by the government of Afghanistan will lead to peace and security in that country, a matter which will have a positive reflection on the region as a whole," Sheikh Khalifa said.
For his side, President Karzai expressed Afghani people's appreciation to Sheikh Khalifa for the unlimited support and contribution in the Afghanistan rebuilding efforts.
He referred to the projects implemented by the UAE in Afghanistan, including the role of the UAE Red Crescent Authority in improving living standards of thousands of families affected by successive wars there.
President Karzai expressed his government's keenness to eliminate all kinds of terrorism in Afghanistan and in the region and praised the international stances in support of these efforts.
"My visit to the UAE is an opportunity to discuss relations between the two countries and to explore ways to enhance them for the benefit of the two friendly peoples," he said.
The meeting was attended by Interior Minister Lt. General H.H. Sheikh Saif bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Ahmed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, chairman of the board of trustees of the Zayed Foundation for Charity and Humanitarian Works, H.H. Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, minister of Presidential Affairs, H.H. Sheikh Hamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Chief of the Abu Dhabi Crown Prince's Court '&' Chairman of the ZoneCorp, Foreign Minister H.H. Sheikh Abdullah bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Sheikh Khalid bin Zayed Al Nahyan, H.H. Dr Sheikh Sultan bin Khalifa Al Nahyan and H.H. sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Finance Department.
It was also attended by Brigadier Dr Sheikh Saeed bin Mohammed al Nahyan, Deputy Inspector General at the Interior ministry, H.E. Sheikh Mohammed bin Butti Al Hamed, the Ruler's Representative in the Western Region, H.E. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mubarak Al Nahyan, Minister of Public Works, H.E. Sheikh Ahmed bin Saif Al Nahyan, Chairman of Etihad Airways, H.E. Sheikh Sultan bin Tahnoun Al Nahyan, Chairman of Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, H.E. Dr Hadef Jawan Al Dhaheri, Minister of Justice, H.E. Ahmed Juma Al Zaabi, Deputy Minister of Presidential Affairs, Sheikhs, senior officials and members of the delegation accompanying the President of Afghanistan.
Sheikh Khalifa hosted an Iftar banquet in honour of President Karzai and his accompanying delegation.
