‘Saudi intervention in Bahrain was a miscalculation’
TEHRAN, June 1 (MNA) - Former Iranian Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Velayati has said that Saudi Arabia’s military intervention in Bahrain was due to a miscalculation.
Velayati, who is currently a senior advisor of Iran’s Supreme Leader, made the remarks during an interview with the website of the Center for Preserving and Publishing the Works of Grand Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, which was published on Tuesday.
“I, as a political expert, recommend that Saudis think about their real interests,” Velayati stated.
Elsewhere in his remarks, he said the fact that Egypt allowed Iranian warships to cross the Suez Canal and enter the Mediterranean after former Egyptian Hosni Mubarak’s ouster, and that the Egyptian officials made overtures to the Iranian government thwarted the U.S. efforts which were meant to tighten the political and economic pressure on Iran.
He also said that the U.S. officials made attempts to bring their own allies into power in Egypt, but the people did not give in to their pressure.
