Japan asks WTO to launch panel for settling dispute with Canada

TOKYO (Kyodo) - Japan asked the World Trade Organization on Wednesday to launch a panel for settling its dispute with Canada over a Canadian province's preferential treatment of local companies in promoting renewable energy sources, the government said.
Ontario required 40 to 50 percent of components for solar and wind power generation systems to be procured in the province when it introduced a feed-in tariff system in 2009 to purchase electricity generated with such systems.
Japan filed a complaint with the world trade watchdog last September against the requirement that would work to the disadvantage of Japanese and other foreign companies.
Despite bilateral talks, the province raised the local content requirement to a 50-60 percent range in January.
In response, Japan now plans to solve the problem through the WTO dispute settlement panel.
