Hyundai Motor Group's U.S. market share tops 10 pct

SEOUL, June 2 (Yonhap) -- South Korea's leading automaker Hyundai Motor Group said Thursday its market share in the United States surpassed 10 percent for the first time in May on Japanese rivals' setbacks from a quake and tsunami in March.
The group, including South Korea's leading automaker Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp., sold 107,426 vehicles in the U.S. last month, taking up 10.1 percent of the American market, up from 7.3 percent a year earlier.
It is the first time for Hyundai Motor Group, the world's fifth-largest automaker, to achieve a double-digit market share in the U.S., according to group officials.
The May figure was the fifth-largest U.S. market share after those of General Motors Co. (GM), Ford Motor Co., Chrysler Group LLC. and Japan's Toyota Motor Corp.
Hyundai Motor Group's May market share, however, was below earlier expectations forecast by a U.S. automotive information company, TrueCar.com, which predicted Hyundai Motor Co. and Kia Motors Corp.'s combined sales to reach 115,435 units with their market share climbing to 10.9 percent, ahead of Chrysler and Toyota.
GM took the top post with a 20.8 percent market share in May, followed by Ford with 18 percent, Chrysler with 10.7 percent and Toyota with 10.2 percent.
