Samsung sues AU Optronics for LCD patent infringement in U.S.

SEOUL, June 2 (Yonhap) -- Samsung Electronics Co. said Thursday that it has lodged a complaint with the U.S. International Trade Commission against AU Optronics Corp., a Taiwanese maker of liquid crystal display (LCD) panels, for allegedly infringing its patents.
Samsung is seeking to secure import and sales bans on AU Optronics' LCD devices in the U.S. that the Korean company claims violate its several LCD patents, Song Chul-kyu, a spokesman for Samsung Electronics, said by phone.
Samsung also filed two suits with the U.S. District Court of Delaware and the District Court for the Northern District of California against the Taiwanese LCD maker.
Samsung, which competes neck-and-neck with its hometown rival LG Display Co. for the world's top LCD supplier position, is also engaged in a legal fight with Apple Inc. on mobile phones.
AU Optronics is the world's third-largest maker of LCD panels, which are used for smartphones, televisions and personal computers.
