S. Korean defense minister to attend security forum in Singapore

SEOUL, June 2 (Yonhap) -- Defense Minister Kim Kwan-jin will leave for Singapore this week to attend a regional security forum on a trip aimed at deepening military ties with nations in the Asia Pacific region, officials said Thursday.
Kim will arrive in Singapore on Friday and meet his counterparts from China, Japan and Australia at the annual Shangri-La security dialogue this weekend, the ministry said in a statement.
On Saturday, Kim plans to hold a series of bilateral talks with his counterparts, including Chinese defense minister Liang Guanglie and Japanese defense minister Toshimi Kitazawa.
But no bilateral meeting with U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates was set because of a "scheduling matter," Defense Ministry spokesman Kim Min-seok told reporters.
"The Singapore visit by Minister Kim is expected to expand and deepen military relations with nations in the Asia Pacific," the spokesman said.
During the two-day conference, Kim also plans to give a keynote speech titled "East Asia's New Distribution of Power and Its Implications," according to the statement.
