Kia Motors to expand U.S. production facility

SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) -- Kia Motors Corp., South Korea's second-largest automaker, said Friday that it will expand its manufacturing plant in Georgia, the United States, to increase its production capacity by 20 percent to 360,000 vehicles a year.
The planned expansion of the facility will cost about US$100 million, according to company officials.
The decision comes as Kia Motors' sales in the U.S. are rapidly increasing, especially since the launch of its award-winning passenger sedan K5, sold in the United States as the Optima, last year.
The company's U.S. sales jumped 53.4 percent last month from a year earlier to 48,212 units, the company said earlier. Sales of the Optima jumped 210 percent on-year to 7,400 units in May.
Kia's Georgia plant will also begin producing the Optima from September, the company officials said.
