Arrested gambling broker won bets on football game last year: prosecutors

CHANGWON, South Korea, June 3 (Yonhap) -- A gambling broker arrested in connection with match-fixing schemes this season in South Korea's top professional football league also made huge sums of money last year from betting on football games, prosecutors here said Friday.
Prosecutors in this southeastern town of Changwon, about 400 kilometers from Seoul, said a 27-year-old broker, identified by his surname Kim, won about 200 million won (US$185,200) after wagering on K-League regular-season games in 2010. Kim was arrested last week for allegedly paying K-League players to try to lose games on purpose and making money by betting against the players' teams.
Prosecutors said they suspect match fixing may have been in play during last year's games on which Kim had wagered.
Five active K-Leaguers have been arrested in a widening match-fixing scandal. Prosecutors are also looking at some matches from last season that attracted 1 billion won, the most allowed on a single match, in betting money. Betting was made through Sports Toto, the only licensed sports lottery in the country.
Later Friday, prosecutors indicted Kim and another broker, also surnamed Kim. They were accused of giving a Daejeon Citizen midfielder 120 million won and a Gwangju FC goalkeeper 100 million won to plot match fixing.
Prosecutors said both Daejeon and Gwangju had games on April 6, and brokers paid the players in cash two days prior to the games.
Investigators have found out that the brokers actually had 280 million won at hand, and 60 million won remains unaccounted for. They plan to reveal the source of the money next week when players are to be indicted.
Prosecutors have reportedly questioned other players and coaches suspected of being connected with match-fixing attempts.
