SEOUL -- South Korean stocks finished nearly unchanged Friday as caution prevailed ahead of a U.S. labor data release, analysts said. The local currency climbed against the U.S. dollar.
After volatile trading, the benchmark Korea Composite Stock Price Index (KOSPI) shed 0.03 percent, or 0.73 point, to 2,113.47. Trading volume was thin at 257 million shares worth 6.73 trillion won (US$6.23 billion) with gainers outpacing losers 441 to 368.

(LEAD) Lee, ex-GNP leader Park agree to work together for ordinary people, internal unity
SEOUL -- President Lee Myung-bak and former ruling party chief and leading presidential contender Park Geun-hye agreed Friday that the party should focus on caring more for people's livelihood and boosting internal unity to win back public trust, Park said.
The meeting between Lee and Park came as their Grand National Party (GNP) has been seeking to restore voter confidence ahead of next year's parliamentary and presidential elections as a sense of crisis has deepened in the wake of its humiliating defeat in April's by-elections.

Prosecutors request arrest warrant for ranking financial official
SEOUL -- State prosecutors on Friday sought a warrant to arrest a high-ranking financial official over allegations that he received bribes from a financially troubled bank in return for helping thwart audits into the bank's illegalities.
Kim Gwang-soo, commissioner of the Korea Financial Intelligence Unit under the control of the Financial Services Commission (FSC), is suspected of using his influence last year to prevent Busan Savings Bank from being forced to shut down over illegal loans and other financial wrongdoings.

SEOUL -- Prosecutors questioned the chairman of Kumho Petrochemical Co. on Friday over allegations that he created huge slush funds and earned unfair profits using the company's internal information.
Park Chan-koo, a younger brother of Kumho Asiana Group chairman Park Sam-koo, is suspected of having raised as much as 10 billion won (US$9.3 million) in slush funds by manipulating receipts in transactions with subcontractors.

(LEAD) Arrested gambling broker won bets on football game last year: prosecutors
CHANGWON, South Korea -- A gambling broker arrested in connection with match-fixing schemes this season in South Korea's top professional football league also made huge sums of money last year from betting on football games, prosecutors here said Friday.
Prosecutors in this southeastern town of Changwon, about 400 kilometers from Seoul, said a 27-year-old broker, identified by his surname Kim, won about 200 million won (US$185,200) after wagering on K-League regular-season games in 2010. Kim was arrested last week for allegedly paying K-League players to try to lose games on purpose and making money by betting against the players' teams.

SEOUL -- Police said Friday they have arrested more than 2,000 foreigners for gambling, violence and other crimes in recent months.
The preliminary figure shows crimes by foreigners are on the rise in South Korea, home to more than 1.2 million foreigners, Kang Shin-gurl, an official of the National Police Agency, said without elaborating.
