S. Korea beats Serbia 2-1 in football friendly

By Yoo Jee-ho
SEOUL, June 3 (Yonhap) -- South Korea defeated Serbia 2-1 in a football friendly match here Friday, earning its first victory over the Europeans.
At Seoul World Cup Stadium, defensive back Kim Young-kwon scored a goal and set up another in only his fourth international match. Kim, who plays for Omiya Ardija in Japan, is auditioning for South Korea's left wingback position, after veteran Lee Young-pyo retired from international play earlier this year.
South Korea struck first in the 10th minute before more than 40,000 fans. AS Monaco forward Park Chu-young headed in a cross from Kim Young-kwon, just out of reach for the Serbian keeper Bojan Saranov.
Kim scored one for himself in the 53rd. Cha Du-ri drove deep into the Serbian zone on the right wing and rolled a pass across the box, and the unmarked Kim charged in to hammer it into the gaping net, with Saranov caught out of position.

Serbia scored its lone goal in the 86th, as Radosav Petrovic pounced home a loose ball after South Korea failed to clear it out of the zone.
South Korea was in control for most of the match with effective passing in tight space. Its forwards and midfielders were aggressive with forechecking on Serbian ball carriers, while defenders held their ground against the bigger Serbian front line.
South Korean goalkeeper Jung Sung-ryong made the save of the match in the 18th minute, diving to his right and scooping out a header by Aleksandar Kolarov right at the goal line. Ranko Despotovic rang the rebound off the crossbar.
Serbia almost scored a fluky goal in the 33rd, when Petrovic floated the ball toward the net from the half line. Jung slipped as he backed into the net, but the ball went off the left post.
South Korea kept the visiting defense on its heels for most of the opening half. In the 38th minute, Lee Keun-ho got behind three Serbian defenders to set up a one-on-one chance against Saranov, but the Serbian netminder denied Lee with a kick save.
Moments before the first half whistle, Kim Jung-woo's header off a Lee Chung-yong cross hit the side netting.
Serbia came into the match ranked 16th in the world, 15 spots ahead of South Korea, but the Europeans didn't bring their best squad. Notable absentees were a pair of English Premier League players -- Nemanja Vidic, a defensive stalwart for Manchester United, and Branislav Ivanovic, a defender for Chelsea.
This was the first of two friendlies for South Korea this month. Next Tuesday, South Korea will host Ghana in Jeonju, about 240 kilometers south of Seoul. South Korea set up these matches as early tests ahead of September's Asian qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup.
